PostSubject: Healthy washing machine   Sat Aug 21, 2010 2:51 am

Not really baby related (well sort of) My washing machine was starting to smell a bit mouldy Puke . i did a bit of research and discovered that if u use non-bio powder (as most of us mummies do) it tends to clog up the innards with gunk. This is because Bio powder has bleaching agents which help to disperse and break down this gunk. Non-bio doesnt have bleaching agents.

Every month or so i put the washer on a boil wash with a couple dishwasher tabs or dishwasher "cleaner" tabs which help get rid of gunk etc. if left, the gunk will eventually rust bits of the inside and KAPOOT u hav a broken washer No

oooh well I kind of knew that - but not what it did!
I use bio for our clothes sometimes which must keep it clean, I have had my machine almost 10 years and its only broken once but that was mechanical!

I dont know what I'd do if it broke...maybe buy a new one hahahah

The hottest wash your machine does - in my case its 90 degrees - I don't think many go hotter than that?

I researched this too when I was having the same problem. Apparently using liquid detergent also causes the smell.

I stopped using it and went back to powder and it now smells yummy!

Yeah ive noticed using fabric softener makes me drawer in my machine right manky - I have to get it out and scrub it with a toothbrush. We just got a new washing machine last month so will be def taking your tip and doing the boil wash or use bio eveynow and then to keep it fresher as after 6 years my old one had started to smell a bit fusty Laughing

Ah now that makes sense! When I had Lottie I switched to non bio for all our washing and I thought my machine smelt funny sometimes Neutral , anyway I switched back to bio for us and still washed in non bio for Lottie and now it smells better!

I do the boil wash thing too and I just shove some bleach in the washer with mine. Though I do still use bio on the kids clothes as non bio doesnt always seem to get the clothes really clean!

xx

you can also buy this stuff in a green bottle, the brand is 'busters' i think, and you put some in ( it says on the bottle) and do a boil wash, then do like a rinse cycle, and it cleans it all out. you can use it on dishwashers and drains etc aswell i think.

I was told similar with my dishwasher.... I used tablets and the engineer that kept coming out to fix it told me to buy powder which is cheaper too Laughing also to run dishwasher on empty ... I've never really used non-bio, all 3 were quite sucky and non bio never got anything clean enough.. With the eldest, I used to wash in bio then in non bio so it had that softness to it Very Happy that wore off with the next 2
